Requirements

1. Enable an Android smartphone to function as a live display for an off-the-shelf automotive backup camera without a dedicated head unit.
2. Provide a simple and intuitive connect/disconnect user experience.
3. Detect vehicle reverse-gear engagement and use it as the primary trigger for system activation.
4. Automatically launch the camera application when the vehicle enters reverse to minimize driver distraction.
5. Automatically terminate the camera application when exiting reverse.
6. Support switching between USB OTG data transfer and phone charging to improve usability.
7. Deliver stable, low-latency video performance suitable for real-time reversing.
8. Prioritize seamless operation with minimal user interaction for driver safety.

Responsibilities

• Led the project from initial concept through multiple fully functional prototypes.
• Developed hardware, Android application, packaging, and product labeling.
• Built and validated over 100 working prototypes.

Results

• Sold 30 units, each hand installed in customer vehicles and was actively used.
